YESHIVA DROPS 45-43 WOMEN'S BASKETBALL HEARTBREAKER TO ST. JOSEPH'S (BROOKLYN)
Laufer grabs 21 of Yeshiva's 73 rebounds; Kempin hits double-digits again; Maccabees travel to Mount Saint Mary on Jan. 22

(New York, NY) - Senior Tova Laufer (New York, NY/Ramaz) notched her third double-double of the 2008-09 season with 11 points and a season-high 21 rebounds, and junior Lauren Kempin (Fairlawn, NJ/Frisch) scored in double figures for the fourth straight game, and fifth time during her last six games, but the Yeshiva University Women's Basketball team lost its ninth straight game, 45-43 to St. Joseph's-Brooklyn on Sunday, Jan. 21 at Baruch College. With the loss, YU is now 1-10 overall and 0-2 in Hudson Valley Women's Athletic Conference (HVWAC) play. More

(New York, NY) - Junior Lauren Kempin (Fairlawn, NJ/Frisch) enjoyed her second consecutive double-double and third of the 2008-09 season with 10 points and 11 rebounds to go with five blocked shots, four steals, and three assists, and sophomore Avigail Varnai (Skokie, IL/ICJA) had a team-high 14 points and added seven rebounds and three assists, but the Yeshiva University Women's Basketball team lost its eighth straight game despite a tremendous effort, 78-57 to Skyline Conference powerhouse Farmingdale State on Thursday night at Yeshiva University. Junior wins third and fourth awards this week after averaging 24.5 points, 9.5 rebounds per game 

(New York, NY) – Yeshiva University Men’s Basketball junior Martin Leibovich (Buenos Aires, Argentina/ORT II) has now earned four major weekly awards after an outstanding week of play during which the guard/forward led the Maccabees to a 1-1 record. For terrific play during a competitive loss to CUNY powerhouse Barch College and a 74-71 overtime win of Maritime College on Thursday night, Leibovich was named the Skyline Conference Player of the Week, ECAC-Metro Co-Player of the Week, and was named to the PrestoSports/Metropolitan Basketball Writer’s Association Honor Roll and D3Hoops.com Team of the Week. The honors were the first weekly awards of Leibovich’s career. More

(New York, NY) – Yeshiva University Men's Basketball junior Martin Leibovich (Buenos Aires, Argentina/ORT II) has been named both the Skyline Conference Player of the Week and to the PrestoSports/Metropolitan Basketball Writer's Association (MBWA) Honor Roll after a terrific week of play during which the Maccabees finished play with a 1-1 record. Leibovich was outstanding during a 73-63 loss to CUNY powerhouse Baruch College and a 74-71 overtime upset win over Maritime College. More

(Patchogue, NY) - Junior Lauren Kempin (Fairlawn, NJ/Frisch) notched her second double-double of the 2008-09 season, scoring a season-high 15 points and adding 13 rebounds, and junior Jaclyn Ramras (Woodmere, NY/SKA) added seven points and six rebounds, but the Yeshiva University Women's Basketball team lost its seventh straight game, 67-34 to St. Joseph's (LI) on Sunday afternoon at St. Joseph's. MAGILNICK, LEIBOVICH LEAD YESHIVA TO UPSET OF MARITIME COLLEGE IN MEN'S BASKETBALL
Down 16 points late in the first half, YU storms back to improve to 5-5, 3-3 in Skyline Conference play

(New York, NY) – After being cut from the Yeshiva University Men's Basketball team as a sophomore a year ago, Yeshiva Men's Basketball junior Aryeh Magilnick (Los Angeles, CA/YULA) became renowned as one of the most popular figures within the YU Athletics Department. A manager to the Men's Basketball program and assistant to the department, Magilnick's popularity revolved around his desire to perform whatever tasks were asked of him, and being dependable to complete his duties in a timely and successful manner. On Saturday night, Magilnick - now a member of the YU Men's Basketball team - lent a helping hand to the program that will not soon be forgotten. An outside shooting specialist, Magilnick's dramatic three-pointer with 0:03 remaining in regulation tied the score at 59 and sent Yeshiva's Skyline Conference battle with Maritime College into overtime. The Maccabees ultimately won the battle, 74-71, improving their overall record to 5-5, and bringing their post-season hopes to life. More

(Troy, NY) - Freshman Daniella Barber (Seattle, WA/Northwest Yeshiva) scored a career-high 14 points and added 15 rebounds for her first career double-double, and senior Tova Laufer (New York, NY/Ramaz) had a monster game with 20 points, 19 rebounds, and three assists, but the Yeshiva University Women's Basketball team lost its fifth straight game, 68-61 in overtime to Sage College on Sunday afternoon. (New York, NY) - Yeshiva University Women's Volleyball senior Adira Katlowitz (Brooklyn, NY/Yeshiva Flatbush) and junior Nili Block (Teaneck, NJ/Bruriah) have been named to the 2008 Hudson Valley Women's Athletic Conference (HVWAC) All-Conference team. After leading Yeshiva to a 2-14 overall record during its inaugural varsity season and 2-4 in HVWAC play, Katlowitz and Block became the first Yeshiva University Women's Volleyball players to ever earn All-Conference honors. More

This time around, Brookim earned the honor after perhaps the finest game of his career, leading Yeshiva to a 60-52 win over Bard College on Tuesday night. (New Rochelle, NY) - Four Maccabees scored in double figures, including sophomore Lauren Kempin (Fairlawn, NJ/Frisch), who notched a double-double as Yeshiva University Women's Basketball team evened its record at 1-1 with a 63-16 win over the College of New Rochelle on Thursday night at the College of New Rochelle. (New York, NY) – Junior Martin Leibovich notched his first career double-double, scoring 29 points and adding 10 rebounds to go with four assists, and sophomore Simon Brookim (Brentwood, CA/Valley Torah) added 17 points and nine rebounds as the Yeshiva University Men's Basketball team rallied for a 77-62 win over CCNY on Wednesday night at the Max Stern Athletics Center. With the win, YU is now 2-1 overall. The come-from-behind win was also the 375th win during the illustrious coaching career of Dr. Jonathan Halpert, who is in his 37th season on the YU sideline. Halpert is seeking to become the 56th Head Coach in Division III Men's Basketball history to reach 400 career wins. More

(New York, NY) – After missing the entire 2007-08 season with an injury and missing the first game of the season on Saturday night, Yeshiva University Men's Basketball sophomore Simon Brookim (Brentwood, CA/Valley Torah) made the most of his first career playing time on Sunday, scoring 18 points on 8 for 11 shooting as the Yeshiva University Men's Basketball team defeated Berkeley College 65-48 during the Consolation Game of the Ramapo College Tip-off Tournament. For his efforts, Brookim was named this week's Skyline Conference Men's Basketball Rookie of the Week. More

(Yonkers, NY) – Sophomore Zachary Stern (Columbus, Ohio/Columbus Torah Academy) scored twice, including the game winner 3:54 into the second overtime period, and junior Daniel Rosenthal (Panama City, Panama/IAE) made a game-high 25 saves as the Yeshiva University Men's Soccer team finished the 2008 season with a thrilling 2-1 double-overtime win over Berkeley College on Sunday night at Tibbetts Brook Park in Yonkers, New York. With the win, YU ends the season with a 2-12 overall record. More

 

MEN'S BASKETBALL FINISHES 1-1 AT RAMAPO COLLEGE TOURNAMENT
Maccabees fall to NJAC powerhouse Ramapo on Saturday, defeat Berkeley; YU hosts CCNY on Wednesday for 2008-09 home opener

(Mahwah, NJ) – With first-year players accounting for more than 65% of the offense, the Yeshiva University Men's Basketball team opened the 2007-08 season with a 1-1 finish at the Ramapo College Tournament on Nov. 15 and Nov. 16 at Ramapo College in Mahwah, New Jersey. The Maccabees opened play with an 80-39 loss to host Ramapo on Saturday night. On Sunday, YU downed Berkeley College 65-48. More

 

YESHIVA SCORES HISTORIC FIRST-EVER WIN IN WOMEN'S SOCCER, 9-0 OVER POLYTECHNIC  
Rosenberg nets hat-trick as Yeshiva nets nearly every single-game program record; Maccabees outshoot Polytechnic 47-1 en route to first-ever victory

(Yonkers, NY) – After nearly two seasons of one devastating defeat after another, on Tuesday night it was time for the Yeshiva University Women's Soccer team to hand one out. Junior Odeliah Rosenberg (Paramus, NJ/Maayanot Yeshiva) scored the first hat-trick in YU history, and seven Maccabees found the back of the net as Yeshiva raced out to a 7-0 first half lead en route to a 9-0 win over the Polytechnic Institute of NYU for the first win in the history of the Yeshiva University Women's Soccer program. With the win, Yeshiva finishes the 2008 season with a 1-12 record. More

Former Shippensburg, Vassar Assistant Coach brings more than 20 years of coaching experience to YU

(New York, NY) – Yeshiva University Director of Athletics Joe Bednarsh has announced the hiring of Philip Kahn as the University’s Head Baseball Coach. A 1993 graduate of Yeshiva’s Benjamin N. Cardozo School of Law, Kahn brings nearly two decades of baseball coaching experience to the YU Athletics Department, including stints at three different college programs. More

(Newburgh, NY) – Junior goalie Tamar Kram (Newton, MA/Maimonides) made 10 saves, and the YU defense held a strong Mount Saint Mary attack off of the scoreboard for the final 31 minutes of play, but the Yeshiva University Women's Soccer team fell to 0-7 with a 10-0 loss to Mount Saint Mary on Tuesday night at Mount Saint Mary. (Brooklyn, NY) - Junior Shira Apfel (West Hempstead, NY/YUHS) had a career-high nine kills, and junior Nili Block (Teaneck, NJ/Bruriah) registered 17 digs as the Yeshiva University Women's Volleyball team won for the second time in its inaugural season, a 3-1 triumph to the Pratt Institute on Sunday afternoon at Pratt. (Yonkers, NY) – For more than 45 minutes on Sunday night, Yeshiva goalie Tamar Kram (Newton, MA/Maimonides) could do no wrong. Against one of the best teams the Skyline Conference has to offer, Kram competed in perhaps the best half of her outstanding career, stopping 15 out of 17 shots as St. Joseph's took a 2-0 lead into halftime.
